The emergency room at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn was teeming with people. Dr. Robert J. Gore was one of the attending
physicians when two young men in their 20s came into the trauma unit. One was shot in the chest and face, the other in the stomach and back. One of them died. Dr. Gore had the responsibility of informing the family who had gathered in the waiting room. On his way there, he was approached by a young woman who greeted him with a warm hello. “Dr. Gore, do you remember me?” she asked. “You took care of me a few months ago when I had my miscarriage. I am here to see my boyfriend [name given]. You remember you met him, too?
